What does the Health Check measure?
The Health Check asks nine questions across six themes: awareness, reporting, policies, checks, governance and social value. Every answer scores 0 for a significant gap, 1 for a partial or informal arrangement, and 2 for something structured and evidenced. Each theme is then averaged, and so is your organisation overall.
- Priority Red. An average below 0.8. There is a real gap here, and it is the first thing to fix.
- Action Amber. An average of 0.8 to 1.4. Something is in place, but it is not yet consistent or evidenced.
- Strong Green. An average above 1.4. Structured, evidenced and worth keeping under review.
This is a self-assessment, not an audit. It tells you where to look, not what a regulator would conclude.

Is the Health Check tool free?
Yes. The Health Check tool is free, takes about two minutes, and nothing has to be bought afterwards.
How is my safeguarding score worked out?
Each of the nine questions scores 0 for a significant gap, 1 for a partial or informal arrangement, and 2 for something structured and evidenced. Each theme is the average of its own questions, and the overall score is the average of all nine. An average below 0.8 is Red, 0.8 to 1.4 is Amber, and above 1.4 is Green.
Is this the same as the free Safeguarding Health Check conversation?
No. This tool is an instant self-assessment you complete yourself in about two minutes. The free Safeguarding Health Check is a conversation with Hazel that goes well beyond nine questions and produces a real gap analysis.
